A favorite of the band, and a typical set closer. Little Hipster started out as a joke song about hipsters not having a good time, but quickly transformed into an actual sincere song about love, and loss, and the passage of time, and the redemptive and Proustian power of music itself.
Little known fact #1 about Little Hipster: Kelan and Mack usually decide on the spur of the moment which horn player will be killed at the end of the horn "duel", but it was almost always Kelan who got killed.
Little known fact #2 about Little Hipster: During the duel, the melody Kate is riffing on is "One of Us" by ABBA. Slush has an ABBA problem, we are well aware.
Little known fact #3 about Little Hipster: Slush's dog Lincoln was put to sleep while the song was being written, and there are a few lyrics that reference his feelings about that, notably the line "And if I never sleep, tomorrow's lies could keep, my cover never would be blown", referring to the thoughts he had the night before the dreaded vet appointment. So it's a sad song!
And finally, soon to be well known fact #1 about Little Hipster; we really botch the ending of the song on this performance, but hey, that happens sometimes! As mentioned, this is "warts and all" live stuff.
lyrics
Starlight on Friday night Black glasses hipster tight
Surrender to our favorite song
Big scarf, skinny tie Plaid shirt fits just right
Perfection never could go wrong
Maybe it is just me but I look at you and think that
There’s only two who feel this way
There’s no one else but you, and My love for you is true, while
Forever now this song will play
But the bajno is on the fritz, the
Bass drum lost its kick, the Singer’s wail is but a moan
What will you do when the music’s all done
Where will you go when it’s time to go home
When your friends are no fun,
And the money’s all gone, you know that
You will always find a home right in a song
Then Zig broke up the band, and You let go of my hand, our
Musical spell was snapped in two
Through haze of cigarettes, the Crushing weight of regret, now
There’s nothing left for us to do
And though your friend said yes, I Feel that I must confess, with
her I still felt all alone
And if I never sleep, then Tomorrow’s lies could keep, and
My cover never would be blown
Cause I did not say what I meant
My love is permanent, It lives forever in our song
What will you do when the music’s all done
Where will you go when it’s time to go home
When the silence has won,
And your love is all gone, you know that
You will always find a home right in a song
(slow into trumpet fantasy section)
I had a dream last night, we Were back at the Starlight, and
Our band they played our favorite song la-la-la-la-laaaa
With one last thing to feel, it
felt so much more than real, and I held you close we sang along
la-la-la-laaaaa
Though I know things will not be the same, when
I think of this refrain, I Know that I am already home
What will you do when the music’s all done
Where will you go when it’s time to go home
When your friends are no fun,
And the money’s all gone, you know that
You will always find a home right in a song
